Base64 represents bytes using printable characters. It is an encoding, not encryption: anyone who obtains the string can usually decode it. Text conversion also depends on character encoding, particularly for non-ASCII characters.
Convert text without treating it as secret
Base64 is commonly used to carry data through text-based formats. It does not hide content and usually makes it larger, so it is not a substitute for encryption or compression.
- Choose encode for plain text or decode for an existing Base64 string.
- Enter the value and perform the conversion.
- Check that the decoded characters and whitespace look correct.
- Use the result only in the format expected by your application.
Keep in mind: Avoid sharing passwords or private keys in encoded form; Base64 can be reversed easily.
