How to Remove Metadata from a PDF

Check and remove hidden document properties from a PDF before sharing a copy.

PDF properties can include an author name, title, subject, or application details. Removing those fields can reduce incidental disclosure when you share a document, although it does not redact visible text or guarantee that every trace has been removed.

Review the document before editing

Keep your original PDF as a backup. Metadata cleanup changes document properties; it is different from blacking out names, comments, or other content that appears on the page.

  1. Choose the PDF you intend to share.
  2. Review the detected document properties.
  3. Run the metadata removal action and save the cleaned copy.
  4. Open the result and inspect both its pages and properties.

Keep in mind: If sensitive information is visible in the document, redact it with a proper redaction tool and verify the redaction separately.
